IP Mapping (IP Address Forwarding)

NQG_024

With NAT enabled, the IP addresses of nodes on your LAN are private since they are hidden from the Internet. IP Maps let you forward all requests directed to a public IP address provided to you by your ISP through the Netopia router's NAT interfaces. Once configured, all network ports and protocols will be forwarded to a specific host or server behind the Netopia router.

Please Note: Static IP maps only work with IP addresses not assigned to the router for internet access. If your ISP is only routing you a single public IP address, then this document would not be applicable to you. However, you can forward specific ports to designated IP addresses on your LAN via Server List entries. For those instructions, see Quick Guide NQG_025: Server List (Port Forwarding).

Please Note: If your router is currently running Netopia Residential Firmware with a web "GUI" configuration menu, this technote is not applicable to you. Most 3300 Series Netopia Gateways can be upgraded to Enterprise level firmware. Click Here! to purchase the upgrade key. Related documents: NQG_039 NAT and the Basic Firewall

Firmware References:

  • v8.2 R1 (and up) - 3300 Enterprise Series
  • v5.3.7   (and up) - 4000 Series
  • v4.8.2   (and up) - R-Series

Before You Start

Telnet into the Netopia router's Main Menu at 192.168.1.1 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly. Click Here! for instructions on using telnet and Hyperterminal (serial connection).

Login with the user name and password. The Superuser login is required to save changes. If you are unsure of this, contact your network administrator.

Don't forget to press the Enter key to save any entries. Hitting the back space, delete or tab without first hitting enter will undo any changes.

The Esc key will take you back towards the main menu screen.

Once you have completed your configuration, you should reboot the Netopia to save and apply your changes.

IP Map Configuration

  1. From the Main Menu of router console screens, go to Quick Menus, and select Network Address Translation.
  2. Enter Add Public Range.
  3. Enter the Range Name of your choice. For Type, select static.
  4. Enter the First Public Address and Last Public Address you want to map. If you want to configure a 1 to 1 map, (1 public IP address to 1 private IP address) then the First Public Address and Last Public Address should be the same. Once both addresses are entered, select Add NAT Public Range.
  5. From the Network Address Translation screen, select Show/Change Map List. Select Easy-PAT List.
  6. Note: It is highly recommended that you use the default map list Easy-PAT List already created and enabled. If you wish to configure your own NAT Map List, you must include the default PAT (Port Address Translation) map included in the Easy-PAT List (Private Address Range 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 and Public Address Range 0.0.0.0 to --). You will also need to enable your own NAT Map List in your Internet connection profile.

  7. From the Show/Change NAT Map List screen, select Add Map.
  8. Enter the First Private Address and Last Private Address you want to map. If you want to configure a 1 to 1 map, (1 public IP address to 1 private IP address) then the First Private Address and Last Private Address should be the same. Once both addresses are entered, select Use NAT Public Range.
  9. Select the static map you previously created. Then select Add NAT Map.
  10. From the Show/Change NAT Map List screen, select Move Map.
  11. Select your pat map configured by default. Use your arrow keys to move the map to the bottom of your map list and hit your Return/Enter key to accept the new location of your pat map.

Note: The order of the maps in your map list is very important. If your pat map is listed at the top of your map list, all following static maps will not function as all traffic will be diverted to the pat map range.

  12. The computer to which you are static-mapping the public IP must have the Netopia's Ethernet IP address as it's Default Gateway/Default Route.

Conclusion

You have now configured your router for static IP mapping. If you have a switched connection (ISDN or Analog), you will need to either disconnect and reconnect your Internet connection, or restart your router for the NAT Map List changes to take effect. If you wish to filter traffic for your static IP mappings, please see the following Netopia Technote: NQG_039: NAT and the Basic Firewall
