This Technote is a reference to allow remote access and administration of Netopia 3300/3500 Series Internet Gateways.
The Netopia has a built-in web server to allow you to browse into the configuration screens of the router. Telnet access is also allowed into a Command Line Interface, or CLI. In factory default settings, these types of access are only allowed from the LAN interface for security reasons. However, there may be occasions when remote access is necessary for troubleshooting or configuration purposes. Making this change is a very simple matter which is outlined in this document.
Although this will allow remote access into the router, it will still be necessary to enter the admin username and password to make and save any changes. Even with remote access restrictions removed there is a layer of security present.
Please Note: If your router is currently running Netopia Enterprise Firmware version 8.0.10 and later, this technote is not applicable to you.
Firmware Reference
- v7.2 and later -- Netopia 3300 Series
- v6.3 and later -- Netopia 3500 Series
If you call into Netopia Tech Support for configuration assistance and the router is currently connected to the internet, it will facilitate resolving your issue if this process has already been done. You can then reset the Restrictions to Admin Disabled after the call is completed.
Browse into the Netopia's web interface at http://192.168.1.254 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly.
Login with the admin user name and password. Admin login is required to save changes. If you are unsure of this, contact your network administrator.
Once logged in, click on the Expert Mode link in the left-hand side menu (if that link is visible). In the Expert Mode Confirmation screen click on Ok to continue. This menu bar will be visible at the top of your screen if you are in Expert Mode.
Remember to click the
button to save any entries. Hitting the back button without clicking
will undo any changes.
Once you have completed your configuration, click on the
symbol in your upper right hand corner to validate the changes. Then click on Save and Restart.

The Netopia Web GUI Home Page in Expert Mode (Firmware v6.3 and later)
- In the upper menu bar, click on Configure.
- Click on WAN.

- Click on the vcc1 link under WAN IP Interfaces.
- In the WAN IP Interface box:

Please Note: The screen you see may look slightly different depending upon the type of circuit you have.
- Click on the drop-down button for Restrictions.
- Select None from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the Submit button to save this change.
- Click on the
in the upper right hand corner to validate this change.
- In the Save Database box, click on Save and Restart.
You will now be able to remotely access the router configuration menus over the internet, whether by browsing or telnet to the public, or Local Address under the WAN Status on the home screen. Again, for extra security it is advisable to reset the Restrictions to Admin Disabled once remote access is no longer needed.
